By car from Bormio (Stelvio SS 38, 60 km from Sondrio and 190 km from Milan) follow the Foscagno SS 301 to Madonna della Pietà ( 4.5 km from Bormio). From there, take the road on the right that is paved at first then unpaved (signs for the Cancano Lakes). The road goes over Fraele Pass and follows along the shores of the two basins of the Cancano and S. Giacomo lakes and after about 8 km goes past the rest stop. Cross the barrier of the first of the two lakes by car to get to the other side and a few minutes in the car takes you to the mountain hut.

Along the road, on foot or by mountain bike you can get to all of the mountain huts that lie on the shores of the Cancano and S. Giacomo Lakes. To the IV Cantoniera dello Stelvio by way of the Bochetta della Forcola (E; 4-5 hrs). From the Solena hut at 1980 m, take the small Valle della forcola road but leave it on your right shortly after "li Forneli" to pass to the opposite side of the valley. Go up to Piani and Malga Penedolo at 2384m. From there turn northeast and a last part over scree brings you to Bochetta di Penedolo 2703 m, characterized by the erosion of rocks into mushroomlike forms. Go north at 2915 m of elevation and a gentle climbwill take you to Bochetta di Pedenoletto 2790m. A descent of a few meters on the northern side takes you to the basin below. From there, without losing elevation, take the trail that leads northeast to the ruin of the barracks below Bochetta della Forcola. From the pass, take the trail going east staying below the slopes of Punta di Rims. Go down a gentle path halfway down the slope to get to the Stelvio road near fourth trackman's house.
