From Livigno 1816 m, take the road for Val Federia and follow it a short way by car to the parking lot at Ponte della Calcheira 1877m. From there, follow the unpaved road, closed to private vehicles, on foot. You'll shortly come to the lovely church of Federia at 1954 m (20 minutes from the parking lot) with its distinctive bulbous bell tower. Continue, halfway down the mountainside, passing some characteristic alpine huts andcrossing the Rin da Toscé over a bridge at 2015 m. You'll come to the vast level basin of Pian dei Morti or Plan del Isoleta 2050 m (40 minutes from the church of Federia). Up to this point it's also possible, during the summer, to take advantage of the shuttle service that leaves from Livigno (information and schedules at l'APT in Livigno, tel. 0342/996379). At the end of the level area turn right onto a road that takes you up steep curves to the Cassana mountain hut at 2601 m.
