Borgonuovo di Piuro (431 m.) can be reached by turning off the Maloja state road 37 a few kilometers after Chiavenna (which is on the Spluga state road 36 - 119 kilometers from Milan). Leave your car at the parking lot below the waterfalls of Acqua Fraggia, which are easily seen from the road. At the river formed by the waterfall, head for the bank opposite the parking lot. Go uphill on the left to find the sign that indicates the beginning of a lovely stone path which leads to Savagno.

To Chiara e Walter bivouac 2660 m (E; 5 ore). Difference in height 1627 m.
From Savogno, follow the trail that runs above the town and enters the Valley of Acqua Fraggia. Following the river, continue along the right side of the valley (the orographic left) to the Alpigia alpine hut at 1474 m. At the end of the pasture cross the river over the bridge and continue along the opposite side of the valley to the alpine hut Ponciagna at 1816 m. From here a steep slope along pastures brings you to the rocky southern edge of the basin where Acqua Fraggia Lake is located at 2043 m. Following the signs (trail B25), go left (west) and you'll soon come to the shores of tiny Lake Piangesca and just after, to the alpine hut of the same name. From the hut, going up towards the right, enter a large valley and, before reaching the col that cuts off the valley high up, go right again. Follow a lovely stone path that takes you to Lei Pass, where the biouvac is located.
